‘When Pomegranates Howl’ wins at Asian filmfest Barcelona

‘When Pomegranates Howl’ wins at the Asian Film Festival Barcelona in Spain.

Iran, Afghanistan, the Netherlands and Australia’s co-production ‘When Pomegranates Howl’ has grabbed an award at the 2022 Asian film Festival Barcelona (AFFBCN) in Spain.

Directed by Iranian filmmaker Granaz Mousavi, the drama received the Best Screenplay award at the Official Section of the 10th edition of the Spanish event.

‘When Pomegranates Howl’ tells the story of a little boy named Hewad, who lives on the streets of Kabul following the loss of his father and brother.

The 9-year-old Hewad starts working as a cart pusher to support his family. He enjoys doing his job everyday travelling through the Afghanistan capital city.

He actually has a dream and that is becoming the star of cinema. This dream revives as he meets an Australian photographer.

The film has already been shown at a number of global events, including the Fribourg International filmfest in Switzerland, the Bengaluru International filmfest in India, and the Leeds Film Festival in the UK.

Arafat Faiz, Elham Ayazi, Saeedeh Sadat, Fereshteh Alami, Madineh Niaz and Andrew Quilty are some of the cast members of the flick.

Iranian maestro, Hossein Alizadeh, has made the score for the movie.

The AFFBCN specializing in Asian cinema remains faithful to its origins, in which it presents a program that includes more than a hundred films proceeding from around 25 countries in Asia and the Asia – Pacific region, in which historical narrative, gender issues, and drama in all its dimensions fill the cinematographic proposal of this edition with its content.

The 10th edition of the event took place on October 26-November 6.
